Harrogate and Knaresborough MP, Andrew Jones, has launched an online petition to keep Bilton and Starbeck libraries open. This follows North Yorkshire County Council’s proposals to cut funding to the libraries.
Mr Jones said: “The County Council need to think carefully about where to make budget cuts. Withdrawing funding to local libraries is not the answer when there are so many other savings that could be made instead. Councils must look first at cuts to bureaucracy and back office functions.  Many local authorities are implementing innovative schemes to save cash and protect the services people most value - it is these areas where North Yorkshire County Council must start.”
Mr Jones has already delivered thousands of petitions to local homes and has received hundreds of enquiries about the potential library closures from residents.
Mr Jones said: “It’s been great to see the strength of feeling from local people.  If we want to preserve our local services we need to campaign for them and I’m right behind local people who want the County Council to think again. Libraries are at the heart of our community and act as a hub for our local groups. They are simply too important to lose.”
Residents wishing to support the online campaign can do so at www.petition.co.uk/save-bilton-library for Bilton or www.petition.co.uk/save-starbeck-library for Starbeck.  Alternatively you can call Andrew Jones MP on 01423 529614 for a paper copy of the petition.
